The Japan Afro-American Friendship Association (JAFA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening cultural, educational, and business exchanges between the African diaspora and Japan. Established in San Francisco in 2023, JAFA USA continues the legacy of the original JAFA, founded in Tokyo in 1981, which pioneered grassroots connections between these communities.
Through education, culture, and collaboration, we create opportunities for learning, understanding, and empowerment that strengthen bonds across generations.
From Grassroots Vision to Global Impact
Founded in Tokyo in 1981, JAFA began with a simple but powerful idea: bring people together through culture, dialogue, and shared experiences.
Over four decades, JAFA has grown from a small grassroots initiative into an internationally recognized nonprofit. We design programs, exchanges, and cultural initiatives that preserve heritage while preparing young people and families for a more inclusive and connected world.
Fostering collaboration and understanding across cultures through shared experiences.
Creating opportunities for young people to learn together, share ideas, and build lasting relationships.
Festivals, seminars, and gatherings that celebrate diversity and cultural unity.
Hands-on activities in music, art, dance, and traditional practices that encourage creativity and cultural appreciation.
Since JAFA’s founding in 1981, Mel Washington has been the driving force behind the organization. A passionate advocate for cultural exchange, he has dedicated his life to building bridges between the African diaspora, Japan, and the global community.
Under his guidance, JAFA has grown into a respected international nonprofit. His commitment to youth empowerment, cultural understanding, and social progress continues to shape JAFA’s mission and impact.
Guided by his vision, JAFA remains steadfast in its goal: empowering young people, strengthening community ties, and expanding opportunities through education, culture, and collaboration.
Empowering children of the African diaspora and Japanese heritage to connect with their roots, build confidence, and develop essential life skills.
Strengthen identity through cultural programs.
Develop leadership and self-expression skills.
Express culture through art, performance, and shared traditions.
From lively festivals to intimate workshops, JAFA organizes events that bring people together, spark dialogue, and foster collaboration. These experiences strengthen personal connections, professional networks, and community cohesion, celebrating diversity at every level.
For more than 40 years, JAFA has created opportunities, shaped futures, and built cultural pride. Our legacy is measured not just in programs but in the lives we’ve touched and the lasting friendships we’ve helped create.
