Finding My Place in Tokyo Through Music

When I first arrived in Tokyo, I didn’t know a single person. I came with my guitar, a suitcase, and a dream of connecting through music. I quickly learned that Japan’s jazz scene was not just alive—it was thriving.

One night, after an open mic in Shibuya, an older Japanese musician approached me and said, “You sing with soul. You remind me of the blues.” That simple exchange became the start of a beautiful friendship.

Through JAFA’s community events, I met others from the African diaspora—artists, students, and teachers who all shared one thing: a love for cultural exchange. Together, we performed at local festivals, taught workshops to kids, and shared stories that blended African rhythm with Japanese harmony.

Now, three years later, Tokyo feels like home. JAFA helped me find not just an audience, but a community that celebrates both where I’m from and where I am.

✨ Lesson: Culture isn’t a bridge you cross—it’s a rhythm you live.
