When my wife Aiko and I decided to raise our children in Kyoto, we knew we were stepping into a unique cultural blend. As an African American father married to a Japanese mother, I wanted our kids to grow up proud of both sides of their heritage.
Through JAFA’s family programs, our children joined cultural workshops where they learned calligraphy one week and African drumming the next. Seeing them move effortlessly between traditions—bowing politely at the door, then dancing to the beat of the djembe—filled me with hope.
What stood out most was the community’s openness. Other families shared similar stories, navigating identity, language, and belonging. Together, we built a network of understanding that extends beyond culture—it’s about connection.
Now, every time we attend a JAFA festival, I see my children running through crowds waving both Japanese and Pan-African flags. That’s the future we dreamt of.
✨ Lesson: When cultures meet in love, they don’t clash—they create harmony.
